Bedwetting in Children and Adolescents: Can Hypnotherapy Be the Answer?

Updated: Jun 29

Bedwetting, also known as nocturnal enuresis, is a common issue among children and adolescents that can significantly impact both the individual experiencing it and their family. As a parent, witnessing your child struggle with bedwetting can be concerning and may leave you feeling unsure about how to help them. In such situations, exploring alternative therapies like hypnotherapy could offer a solution worth considering.

Here are some key points to consider when it comes to hypnotherapy and bedwetting:

Understanding Bedwetting

Bedwetting is a condition where an individual involuntarily urinates during their sleep. It is important to recognize that bedwetting is not intentional and is often a result of underlying factors such as genetics, immature bladder control, or emotional stress. Most cases resolve naturally over time, but for some children and adolescents, the problem may persist and impact their self-esteem and quality of life.

The Role of Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy, a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to induce a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility, has been increasingly recognized as a potential tool to address bedwetting. By delving into the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy aims to identify and address any psychological or emotional issues that may be contributing to the bedwetting behavior.

How Hypnotherapy Works at Hypnotherapy by the Bay

During a hypnotherapy session for bedwetting, Janis, Award Winning Master Hypnotherapist, will guide the client (your child in most cases) into a state of deep relaxation and heightened receptivity to suggestions. Through tailored suggestions and imagery, she can help reframe the Client's perceptions and responses related to bedwetting, promoting positive behavioral changes.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy

One of the key benefits of hypnotherapy for bedwetting is its non-invasive nature, making it a gentle and low-risk intervention. Additionally, hypnotherapy addresses the psychological aspects of bedwetting, offering a holistic approach to treatment that can support long-term symptom management and emotional well-being.

Is Bedwetting Hypnosis Effective?

Research consistently indicates that hypnosis is an effective method for creating positive outcomes for bedwetters:

  • Diseth & Vandvik (2004): At follow-up after three months and one year, nine out of 12 patients had respectively 6-7/7, and 7/7 dry nights per week.

  • Edwards & Spuy (1985): Subjects were 48 nocturnal enuretic boys, aged 8-13 yr. Treatment consisted of six standardized sessions, one hourly session per subject per week. Results indicated that hypnotherapy was significantly effective over 6 months in decreasing nocturnal enuresis, compared with both pretreatment baseline enuresis frequency and no-treatment controls.

  • Bayne (2023): Seventeen children aged 8 to 15 years old were enrolled and 12 recorded at least 1 month data after the hypnosis intervention. The median dry nights prior to intervention was 8 (0-17) days and improved to 15.5 (7-28) days by the third month post-intervention (P = .0033). All patients who completed the study showed an improvement. Hypnosis showed significant improvement in dry nights without any side effects and any identifiable risk to patients.

Conclusion

Navigating bedwetting in children and adolescents can be a challenging journey for parents; hypnotherapy helps to reduce stress, increase self-confidence and address the underlying causes of this common issue.

If your child is experiencing persistent bedwetting issues, working with Hypnotherapy by the Bay could be the step you need to find effective solutions and positive outcomes.

Now is the time to embrace the possibilities that hypnotherapy offers in addressing bedwetting concerns, and embark on a path towards holistic well-being for your child.
